The coastline running the length of the eastern edge of the Aude department in the Languedoc-Roussillon is dominated by miles of golden sandy beach stretching from the mouth of the River Aude intercepted by lagoons and edged with endless blue sea! It is no wonder that going on vacation here is as popular with the French as it is with foreign visitors.

For many of them, lazing on the beach soaking in the sun, or sitting at portside bistros sipping from a cool glass of wine is more than enough to fill the day. But, with first class facilities and sights of historic and cultural interest, there is so much more on offer along this most impressive coastline.

Modern resorts such as Narbonne-Plage and Saint-Pierre-sur-Mer, Gruissan, Port-la-Nouvelle and Port-Leucate have the advantage of having both good quality beach resorts, with plenty of facilities and activities - especially water-sports - whilst also having interesting local history to explore. And for those who prefer a much less hectic beach holiday try the wilder beaches at Les Ayguades, La Franqui and Leucate-Plage.

These beaches are all within an hour from Montlaur but why not take the scenic route through wonderful French villages, and experience history in the footsteps of the Cathars.
